Analysis of National Defense R&D Trends based onNetwork Analysis: A Korean Case
Abstract
The analysis of national defense trends from the R&D perspective is important in that it is possible to understand how government support is changing to foster the national defense industry and to obtain information necessary for establishing R&D support strategies in the future. In the defense field of Korea, there are various studies that have analyzed trends using papers, patents, and news data, but it is difficult to find research on trend analysis from the perspective of R&D tasks. Therefore, this study analyzes the network centrality of major keywords and changes in simultaneous words over time using R&D task information registered in the Defense Technology Information Service (DTiMS) for analysis of Korean defense R&D trends. As a result of the study, the keyword with the highest degree centrality during the entire period was 'enemy'. In addition, the co-word with the highest growth index appeared in the order of ('detection', 'target', ('tracking', 'target'), and ('cyber'', 'threat') showed the most recent rapid increase. The co-word with the lowest growth was found to be ('performance' and 'optimization'). The results of this study can be used as basic data necessary for identifying the government's R&D support trends to foster the national defense industry and establishing R&D strategies in the defense sector in the future, and it is expected to help experts reduce the time and effort required to conduct defense information activities.
