Examination of The Variables Predicting Cybervictimization in Adolescents

Abstract
Problem Statement: Development, diversification and gradually spreading of information and communication technologies in recent years have affected the socialization patterns of adolescents and become an indispensable part of their interaction and communication with their peers. Uncontrolled and inconvenient use of information and communication technologies by adolescents has become a determinant in defining the concept of cyber victimization, which refers to being bullied exposedtointimidation, humiliation, harassment, embarrassment, and/or are threaten via information and communication technologies by another young person. Within this context, this study purposed to explore the variables that predict cyber victimization in adolescents. Methods: A descriptive research design was employed in the study. As data collection tools, “Cyberbullying Scale”, “Cyber Victimization Scale”, and “Personal Information Form” were administered. The study group was composed of 216 adolescents attending high school in Antalya, Turkey.Data collectedwithinstudywasanalyzedby SPSS 21 statistical program. Results: In the study, the hierarchical regression analysis was performed for determining the factors predicting cyber victimization in adolescents. As a result, it was found that adolescents’ exposure to cyberbullying was predicted by the variables of number of siblings, level of income, having knowledge about cyberbullying, and making cyberbullying. Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, certain recommendations were brought toare provided for educators, researchers, and families.
