Short Term Crime Prevention and the Criminal Justice Systems of Nigeria and South Africa: An Appraisal

Abstract
This paper focuses on the propriety of short-term crime prevention vis-a-vis the criminal justice systems of Nigeria and South Africa. The authors adopted a qualitative research approach. Ten crime prevention practitioners in each of the two countries were interviewed. The article evaluates the efficacy or the aptness of the practice of police patrols as a short-term crime prevention efforts/function of the criminal justice systems of Nigeria and South Africa. The article revealed the importance of police patrol in the short-term crime prevention. The article was concluded on the premise that police patrols are not effective in the short-term crime prevention of Nigeria and South Africa due to many reasons among which are poor resource management, low commitment; poor discipline, lack of proper planning; deficient crime scene analysis; politicised crime intelligence reports; inability of the police to be omnipresent, official corruption.
