Skills Management, Work Engagement, and Employee Performance of Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises: The Mediating Role of Career Development

Abstract
The phenomenon of the insufficient quality of reliable human resources is the key to the company’s success. This study aims to identify and analyze career development mediating the effect of skill management and work engagement on employee performance. The sampling technique used is a census sample of employees of PT. Inhutani I (Persero) which has a career path or opportunity for promotion is 252 respondents. The procedure used in developing and testing the model as well as data processing is the Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results of this study indicate that skill management and work engagement have a positive and significant effect on career development; management skills and work engagement as well as career development have a positive and significant effect on employee performance. The findings of this study prove that indirectly career development is able to fully mediate the influence of skill management and work engagement on employee performance. Future researchers are expected to involve career development as another intervening variable to achieve high employee performance. Although there is an increase in the contribution of career development to human resources management conceptually, there is still a lack of academic studies on that construction, especially in developing countries. For these reasons, this study is intended to examine the deep understanding of factors affecting employee performance in the Indonesian state-owned company.
