Abstract
Purpose - This study undertakes an analysis of the expenditure pattern of package tourists in Jammu and Kashmir. This study aims to know how the expenditure pattern of package tourists varies in the three geographical regions of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir bifurcated into two union territories by the Government of India by the abrogation of Article 370 of Indian constitution.
Methodology - The research scholar has collected data through a survey using a questionnaire. For regional analysis, ANOVA has been used to analyse the regional differences in the expenditure pattern of package tourists.
Findings - The results of One- Way ANOVA with post hoc test confirmed a significant difference between the mean expenditure of tourists in all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir. The post hoc test results confirmed that there is a significant difference in the mean expenditure of package tourists in Kashmir and package tourists in Jammu and Ladakh, respectively. At the same time, there is a significant difference in the mean expenditure of package tourists in Jammu region and Kashmir region but insignificant between Jammu and Ladakh regions. It also indicates a significant difference in the mean expenditure of package tourists in Ladakh region and Kashmir region but insignificant between Ladakh and Jammu regions.
The practical implications-This study enables the policymakers to obtain the necessary information for the implementation of an adequate policy to attract a large number of package tourists. This is beneficial for marketers and tour operators to provide genuine, affordable and attractive packages to boost their business and tourism inflow to Jammu and Kashmir.
Originality – Literature has been reviewed, and it was found most of the studies have focused on general tourist expenditure pattern, and very few have focused on their features like package and non-package, Foreign and domestic etc. and also less number of studies have focused on regional expenditure pattern of tourists particularly at national and state levels. Most of these studies has used regression analysis for their studies. In this study, efforts have been made to do a regional ANOVA analysis of package tourists in Jammu and Kashmir.
Research limitations – The study has many limitations, most of which twig from the problem that package tourists' total expenditure cannot be bifurcated into different sub-categories of expenditure such as expenditure on accommodation, transport, food, entertainment etc.
