Paper Title
Solid Waste Management and Water Quality Matters for Effective Environmental Sanitation in South-Western Nigeria: Ekiti State Experience
Abstract
Waste management is very vital for sustainable development, water quality and environmental sustainability. This paper investigates various categories, characteristics and management of solid wastes in Ekiti Nigeria. The methodology used includes primary data collection through preliminary study, observation and interviews, also as administration of questionnaire. 468 copies of the questionnaire were administered on randomly selected respondents from 3 different residential zones of the town (low, medium and high). Secondary data were collected mainly from Ekiti State Waste Management Board as well as Ekiti State Ministry of Environment. The data were analyzed using simple tools of analysis like tables, frequencies and percentages. The most prominent categories of the waste are agricultural, municipal and domestic. The major constraints to efficient waste management are technical, financial, institutional, economic and social deterrents. The wastes are transported to the dumping ground irregularly. The study revealed further that wastes are not properly managed in Ekiti. The menace has posed social, economic and environmental consequences. The main obstacle to effective management of waste is financial, technical, economic, institutional and social limitations. Hence, the study recommends that there should be a collaborative effort among individuals, government and non-governmental organizations within the management of solid wastes. The study also reveals the major water quality goals and process of water quality management. The study concludes that reduction, reuse, and recycling are the simplest practices for sustainable solid waste management.
