Energy Efficient by Reducing Interference in the Wireless Sensor Networks using the OFDM Modulation Technology with 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz Frequencies

Abstract
Smart homes of the future will contain many wireless sensor networks. Energy efficiency in wireless communications is one of the biggest problems in sensor networks. Increasing efficiency will increase lifetime of sensor devices and reduce interference, increasing the efficiency of traffic in the network. Interference in sensor networks leads to bit errors and packet loss. This paper models the interference in a smart home network. The Received Signal Strength Information (RSSI) reading at each location in the building is calculated using ray tracing software, and this data is used to infer the Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) in the area covered by the network. Features of the IEEE 802.11n protocol and OFDM are proposed to increase SINR in the network. The paper also compares the effect of using different 802.11 spectrum bands 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz on the performance of the network. Keywords - WSN, Interference, RSSI, OFDM.
