Risk Management and Performance of Insurance Companies in India

Abstract
This study examines the impact of risk assessment and mitigation on performance of insurance companies in India. Performance of insurance companies were evaluated using different elements such as uncertainties, risk evaluation, measurement of potential loss, probability of risk occurrence, risk categorization, estimating potential losses, implementation of IRDAI guidelines, and capital requirements. Primary data was collected through questionnaire. Total of 86 respondents have participated from 18 insurance companies located in Pune city, India. The descriptive analysis in collaboration with Linear-by-Linear Association Test were used to analyse the data. The findings demonstrate that reporting and reviewing the risk documents, measurement of loss, probability of risk occurrence, risk categorization and capital requirements are most important determinants in performance of insurance sector. Further, it implies that internal risk elements are important determinants of performance of insurance companies in Indian. The study has implication for Indian insurance sector which recently receiving high attention as economy is growing in its fastest pace ever.
