Paper Title
Sustainable and Resilient “Build Back Better” in Self-Built Dwellings in Beira, Mozambique

Abstract
Cyclone IDAI left many destroyed dwellings in the Beira area of Mozambique. Many of which will soon be rebuilt by the residents, who need instructions to rebuild better than in the past. The purpose of this research is to contribute to safer and more sustainable communities in areas prone to natural disasters in Mozambique using previous research principles applied in South Florida, an area prone to hurricanes and flooding. The goal is to educate the involved parties to rethink “Build Back Better” dwellings in self-built communities using their traditional methods with technological and structural improvements. The objectives of this research are to write and publish a construction manual for sustainable self-build dwellings and the creation and implementation of two training courses to help interested parties to rethink “Build Back Better” dwellings in the informal settlements of Beira. The manual and courses included some basic information such as how to select an adequate building site and illustrations of adequate building techniques in areas with high-risk of cyclones and flooding. In Mozambique, there are no construction manuals or training courses adequate for informal settlements. Residents of Beira are already re-building their dwellings and it is imperative they do it “build back better” this time.
