Entomophagy and Commercially Available Insects Among The Sumi Tribe In Dimapur District of Nagaland, Northeast India

Abstract
Entomophagy is a well known practice among the Sumi tribe of Nagaland. The present study was undertaken with the aim of listing and identifying the edible insects which are commercially available and consumed by the Sumi tribe in Dimapur district, Nagaland. It was found that 13 (Thirteen) species of insects belonging to different order and family were available and consumed. Different mode of consumption were followed for different insects- some were fried, roasted, steamed with local herbs, spices, chutney, etc. The study underlines the potentials of extensive research on edible insects and its nutritional value, and in addition, the need for documentation of traditional rearing and its sustainable use.
