Plasmon-Activated water Effectively Suppresses The Pathogenesis of Periodontitis
Abstract
Periodontitis (PD) is a highly prevalent and chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by gingival bleeding, periodontal pocket formation, and progressive breakdown of the periodontal tissues. Although the detailed mechanism(s) participated in the pathogenesis of PD is not fully understood, the enhanced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines releasing from oral bacteria or host defense system may play an important role in the pathogenesis of PD. With regard to this viewpoint, application of natural agent that is easy access to periodontal tissue and has powerful anti-inflammatory effects will be of great significance in the treatment of periodontal deficiency. Here, we developed the plasmon-activated water (PAW) that possesses high bio-compatibility, significant free radical scavenging ability, and powerful anti-inflammatory activity to test whether drinking of PAW could effectively reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and suppresses the pathogenesis of PD. Results indicated that high pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, reduced dental calcium intensity, and significant resorption of the alveolar bone were detected following PD. However, in animals drinking of PAW after the induction of PD, all above parameters were successfully returned to nearly normal levels. As PAW could effectively preserve calcium level and periodontal integrity by depressing the pro-inflammatory cytokine production, daily drinking of PAW may serve as an advanced therapeutic strategy to strengthen the oral health and to counteract the PD-induced destructive damage.
