The Construction of Indonesian Diaspora Identity in Malaysia

Abstract
This article briefly examines the construction of Indonesian diaspora identity in Malaysia. This is important since the existence of Indonesian diaspora in Malaysia is the backbone for Indonesia-Malaysia relations. The primary objective of this article is to scrutinise Indonesian diaspora identity in Malaysia especially in Penang State as one of the main sites of the Indonesian diaspora. This is a qualitative based research derived from field studies and interviews with Indonesian diaspora as well as locals in Malaysia concerning the identity issues. This research found that the identity of Indonesian diaspora is clearly still influenced by the original culture from Indonesia during their interaction with the locals. Fortunately, the local culture and Indonesian diaspora arguably have similar remarkable Islamic identity in terms of rituals and religious practices. This indirectly helps the harmony between the Indonesian diaspora and the local communities. Keywords - Indonesian diaspora, identity, Malaysian, local, Islam.
