Paper Title
Characterisation Study of a Notch Pin in Separation Mechanism of Launch Vehicle Umbilical

Abstract
The characterization study of a notch pin breakage load which is made of AA2219 material and employed in launch vehicle umbilical is presented. The notch pin is used in the separation system of the umbilical for aerospace applications. The basic machine design methodologies fail to predict the breaking load accurately. The breaking point of notch pin is characterized with experiments. The experiments are conducted with two pins of different notch dia. Finite element simulations with bilinear isotropic plasticity shows improved correlation with the experimental breaking loads. The effect of compressive residual stresses induced during machining of the notch pin in increased breaking load is also discussed briefly. The paper outlines the methodology for prediction of breakage load of ductile notch pins used in separation systems, which are loaded mainly under bending. Keywords - Notch Pin, Breaking load, Bi-linear isotropic strain hardening, Plasticity & Residual stress.
