Paper Title
The use of Attribution in Editorials

Abstract
The attribution of information to the appropriate sources in newspaper publications makes readers have positive judgment of the news information. Newspaper editorials present the voice of the newspaper. One of the devices, editorials employ in presenting their voice is attribution of statements to sources. This paper examined the use of attribution in the editorials of the Daily Graphic and the New York Times. The aim of the study was to find out the frequency and the type of attributions used in the editorials of the two newspapers. Twenty editorials from each newspaper were used for the analysis. The study examined the frequency of attribution and the types of attributions used in the two newspaper editorials. The analysis revealed that the New York Times editorials used attribution more frequently than the Daily Graphic editorials. Also, the analysis showed that the editorials of the New York Times used on the record attribution more frequently than the editorials of the Daily Graphic. It was also found that the editorials of the Daily Graphic tend to use information attributed to “widely believed sources”. Though there were instances that attributions were expected but they were not used in some of the editorials of both the Daily Graphic and the New York Times, the editorials of the Daily Graphic fell short of using attribution in many instances than the editorials of the New York Times. The non-use of attribution when it is expected has implications on the credibility of the information published.etc.] in its style sheet. *CRITICAL: DoNotUseSymbols,SpecialCharacters, Footnotes, orMathin Paper Title orAbstract.
