Effect of Remittances on Food Security in Bangladesh: Implications for Advancing SDG2 in the Context of Socio-Environmental Vulnerabilities

Abstract
There is limited evidence regarding the impact of remittances on food security in Bangladesh, despite the fact that remittances account for 5.4% of the country’s GDP. The present study aims to fill this lacuna by conducting quantitate analysis of the 2010 Bangladesh Household Income and Expenditure Survey. The outcome variables are the indicators of food security based on expenditure on food items and energy intake of household members. The key explanatory variable includes thereceipt of remittances by the household received, gender, and household-level socio-economic characteristics. Our results suggest that remittances have a significant positive effect on food security regardless of the indicator used. The results further suggest that, ceteris paribus, women are significantly more likely to be food insecure. Finally, we find that wealth and geographical location but not working status is significant predictors of food security status. The paper concludes by providing several policy recommendations in the context of the current SDG agenda. Keywords - Food, Remittances, SDG2, Vulnerability, Bangladesh
