Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) of Crude Palm Oil Production in Malaysia

Abstract
Social impact assessment of products has gained most of the attention in society. Social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) provides a holistic assessment by including social impacts and benefits within the whole product life cycle. A detailed assessment of the social impacts and benefits of crude palm oil production in two mills and plantations at Johor Bahru, Malaysia was undertaken based on the UNEP/ SETAC guidelines for S-LCA of products. Two stake holder categories (worker and local community) and eight sub-category indicators wereidentified to be relevant to the study. Survey method using two different set questionnaires for workers and local community were used to collect the data. The results obtained disclose that UNEP/SETAC guidelines application enables a hotspot assessment of the social impacts in life cycle of crude palm oil production. In this paper, the results of a case study carried out using a new social impact assessment method are shown.
