Variation of Democracy and Government Spending in ASEAN Nations

Abstract
The main objective of this study is to give an overview of government spending and the level of democracy in ASEAN nations from 1998 through 2017. The statistics provided in this study were derived mainly from the World Bank and the Center for Systemic Peace. The results drawn from this study show that Brunei has highest government spending over the period of 1998-2017, and followed by Burma and Thailand, respectively. When examined in details, Singapore has highest government spending on Public Defense while Malaysia was on the top as regards to government spending on education. Thailand, however, has the highest government spending on health. Regarding the level of democracy, Burma, Laos, and Vietnam are among the nations with lowest democratic level over the period examined.
