Paper Title
Thermal Conversion of Food Waste to Value-Added Products

Abstract
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), approximately one-third of all food produced in the world is lost or wasted. Food waste represents quite a significant portion in the municipal solid waste. It also poses negative affect to public health and deteriorating the environment. Thermal conversion technologies like pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonisation seem to be promising routes to convert the food waste into value-added products. Biochar, bio-oil and gas are the products that can be obtained during the processes. Biochar is beneficial for many applications such as drinking water filtration, composting agent, building materials, energy application, food packaging, waste water treatment and carbon capture etc. The other products from the thermal conversion process, which are bio-oil and gases can also be used as fuel in the energy sector. The focus of this paper is to provide an overview of the thermal conversion processes to obtain biochar, a solid product from food waste. Keywords - Food Waste, Biochar, Thermal Conversion, Pyrolysis, Hydrothermal Carbonisation.
