A Linguistic Perspective of The Attitude of Health Care Providers Towards Victims of Sexual Violence and Abuse: A Case Study of Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria

Abstract
This study investigates the attitude of health care providers towards victims of sexual violence and abuse in Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria from a linguistic perspective, the investigation tends towards the attitude of the health care providers when dealing with the victims of sexual violence and abuse. This study will inform the society at large on how issues of abuse are handled by health care providers and the actions of the abusers. This study will also serve as a means of soothing psychological pain and medical trauma associated withsexual abuse, as sexual violence and abuse can have devastating effects that can last a lifetime.The geographical location of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, South-western Nigeria was examined to determine what makes an individual a sexual violence and abuse victim and the perception of the respondents on what gender-based violence is. A random sampling is used for the extraction of the population of this study. The sample of this consist offorty (40) Obafemi Awolowo University students and fifteen (15) health practitioners were also selected for the focus group discussion. The questionnaire was analysed using the simple percentile descriptive method, while the focus group discussion was transcribed. The results of the study showed that the females are mostly the victims of gender-based violence because of the attitude of cultures towards female sex as they must always be submissive to the male sex. Also, sexual abuse is about power relations; an individual controlling or threatening another individual. Geographical location and cultural orientation make a significant difference in dealing with the menace of sexual violence and abuse This study suggests that there should be more effective intervention strategies apart from treatment in dealing with the cases of sexual violence and abuse.
