Assessment of Reading Abilities of Grade Two Pupils in STO. Tomas South District: Basis for a Proposed Reading Intervention Skill Book

Abstract
The study aims at developing a reading intervention skillbook for grade two pupils in Sto.Tomas South district. The study employed the descriptive and developmental approach (Borg & Gall, 1989). Descriptive approach gives vivid description of the data needed and developmental approach specifies the sequential steps in designing the proposed reading intervention skillbook thru the use of the achievement of grade two pupils in English and the Phil-Iri results for school year 2018-2019, the dry-run and the peers and experienced educators review on the format and style, objectives, contents, exercises and evaluation of the proposed reading intervention skillbook that provided quantitative information essential in the proposed skillbook. The scope of this research is the assessment of reading abilities of grade two pupils in fifteen (15) public elementary schools in Sto. Tomas South district. For the review of the proposed reading intervention skillbook, fifteen (15) English teachers of grade two pupils from fifteen public elementary schools in the district will serve as peers and the English professors will serve as the experienced educators. The results covered three (3) areas: First, the pre-assessment for the development of a proposed reading intervention skillbook based on the achievement of grade two pupils and the Phil-Iri results for school year 2018-2019; second, the kind of supplementary materials developed in terms of format and style, objectives, contents, and exercises; and third, the evaluation of the proposed reading intervention skillbook by peers and experienced educators. The proposed reading intervention skill book for grade two pupils is well-designed and tailored-fit to the needs and interest of pupils.
