Paper Title
Investigating Real Time Ambient Air Quality Status and Air Temperature during Kalipuja/Diwali Festival in Different Land use Types –Case Study Kolkata
Abstract
In India, festivals are celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and Diwali is one of the major festivalscelebrated across India as well as in Kolkata. During Diwali houses are illuminated by lights and sky is illuminated by fireworks. These fireworks although creates lot of amusement but at the same time causes pollution in the atmosphere in terms of air pollution. In 2018, we monitoredand measured air pollution level during the Diwali timein different land use areasin Kolkata, mainly at various traffic intersections at different landuse types like residential, commercial, open green areas and mixed use types before and after the festival. After the collection of data we investigatedand compared thesedata with standardair quality parametersprescribed by Central Pollution Control Board, India. Our study confirms PM10and PM2.5concentration level its highest value during evening time 1385µg/m3 (PM10) and 950µg/m3 (PM2.5) on7th Nov 2018 i.e. on the day of Diwali. We also observed rise in temperature on 7th Nov as well. This high concentration is maintained in atmosphere for two days on and after the festival which is approximately 9-10 times more than that regulatory standard. The aim of this study is to understand the correlation between traffic intersections in different Landuse types, the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 levels and the land surface temperaturein different areas during the festive days of Kalipuja or Diwali time, mainly the four days on 5th,6th,7thand 8thNovember 2018.
