Voltage Control and Reactive Power Compensation for High Voltage AC Power Transmission System Using Static Synchronous Compensator

Abstract
This work presents an outstanding performance of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) that dealt with the voltage variation problems in high voltage ac (HVAC) power transmission system. Firstly, the Phase Shift Control theory (PSC)is combined with PI controller to produce the require angle order for the phase modulation index to trigger the Pulse Width Modulation controller (PWM).Secondly, the Phase Locked Loop (PLL) algorithmis combined with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique to generate switching pulses for the voltage source inverter (VSI) valves. A simulation test system consisting of 100MVA, 115kV at 50Hz three phase voltage source was implemented using PSCAD/EMTDC Simulation software. The results show thatthe controller is very effective for the STATCOM.The voltage variationproblems in the HVAC transmission system have beenreduced to the highest acceptable margins that meetthe IEEE STD 519-2014.
