The Role of Community Pharmacist in Educating Patients with Antibiotic Prescription in One District in East Java Indonesia

Abstract
Pharmacist is a profession which has a very important role in educating patients taking their antibiotic medicines and in preventing the antibiotics resistance among communities. Pharmacy is one of place where pharmacist supported by the pharmacist technician conduct this role. The aim of this research was to evaluate the role of pharmacist in educating patients in taking antibiotics and in preventing the antibiotics resistance. This was a cross-sectional study. Patient simulation was used to collect the data. Population was pharmacy located in one district in east Java Indonesia. This research got the recommendation from the local pharmacist association. There were 36 pharmacies visited by simulated patient, 27.8% antibiotic prescription dispensing served by pharmacist wheares the rest were served by the pharmacist technicians. Drug information was delivered by 11% of pharmacy staff with the points of information were drug frequency, indication, drug name, time of drug to be taken i.e 82%, 76.40%, 47.20% and 27.80% respectively. The 94% of pharmacy dispensed antibiotics without prescription. The quality of information services met the bad criteria.
