Paper Title
Managing A Research Field Station –Lessons Learned – A Case Study

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of running a field research station based on scientific as well as sound organisational principles. It is necessary to track the value impact of field research stations through appropriate performance metrics. Such metrics must inform the stakeholder and the public of its impact and value-added for such facilities to be sustainable. Limited research about the “management of research field stations” internationally and locally exists. This study focused on a single research facility. Such a facility was empirically analysed and evaluated against achieving goals and demonstrating impact performance metrics. The results suggest the need for clear and well-informed operating procedures as well as dedicated management from the onset of planning and throughout the operation of such facilities. The study supports the application of such knowledge in organisations, industry, academic and governmental institutions for the improvement of science. We recommend more analysis of multiple and varied research facilities, which would give a broader and more confident insight towards improving this facet of the science infrastructure.
