Paper Title
Inequality Education: Analysis of Gender Stereotypes in Polish School Textbooks
Abstract
In the education process, all children should be guaranteed equal access to education, which prepares them for effective adult life in society and motivates them to independently acquire further education. However, the specific construction of tasks and exercises for students, expectations, and personal beliefs of educators are not always identical to the declarations appearing in official documents. This phenomenon, called the hidden curriculum is a set of consequences of participating in the education process, in which students are equipped in addition to knowledge derived from official curricula. It consists of an unplanned transfer of norms, values, and beliefs in the classroom and in the school environment, and includes skills or behaviours that most pupils and teachers take for granted. The results of the study show that the content of school textbooks is not free of stereotypical perception of gender. The results are discussed in the light of the stereotype threat phenomenon.
