Paper Title
Other Cultures as Fairy-Tales in Novels
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine how other cultures in novels, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Moroccan, are presented to the Western public as a fairy-tale world. Marriage of Pleasure by Tahar Ben Jelloun, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golding and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See make references to fairy-tales in order to show illusions about other cultures or the main character’s progress through life. Why are fairy-tales references used to explore cultural differences in mentalities?
Keywords - Cinderella, Collectivism, Individualism, Rags-to-Riches.
