Crucial Factors that Influence School Administration Job Engagement Among Middle and Elementary School Teachers: The Possible Roles of Expectancy and Mission

Abstract
A school administrator’s workload is extremely heavy, and this affects teachers’ willingness to accept a school administration job.Because of an increasing lack of administrative talent in schools, school principals tend to find it necessary to seek personnel from among teachers with a willingness to accept an administration job, even if such individuals may lack strong administrative abilities. We collected 765 valid questionnaires from middle and elementary school teachers in each region of Taiwan through stratified sampling. Additionally, analysis of variance, multiple regression analysis, and structural equation modeling were used to reach conclusions. The main factors that influenceschool administration job acceptanceareexpectancy (E) and a sense of mission (M) in teachers—we refer to this as EM theory. This meansthat school principals should seek teachers with high expectancy and sense of mission for work because they are more willing to engage in a school administration job. Moreover, we analyzedasample of teachers workingin school administration jobs at the time of the study. Our results did not indicate an obvious trend of middle-level school administrators becoming increasingly mediocre performers.
