Paper Title
Study the Properties of Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide to Apply it in Paints and Coatings as an Application of Nanotechnology
Abstract
Paint industry is growing in a very large scale nowadays. Chemical industry plays an important role in developing nanotechnology for various applications. Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular and supra molecular scale. In this paper various properties of TiO2 (Titanium Oxide) and ZnO (Zinc Oxide) is studied so as to understand its applications in Paint Industry and in Coatings. Paints can be made dust repellant, water repellant (Lotus Technology), oil repellant, protected from UV radiations by using nanotechnology. The electronic properties of metallic nano-particles make them ideal materials for various nano devices. Addition of nano-fillers in the polymeric coatings results in increased barrier properties, thermal stability, fire- resistance, transparency and color purity as well as resistance to organic solvents. The photo catalytic process of TiO2 or ZnO involves the generation of electron-hole pairs during exposure to light. These holes are able to react with nearby molecules to produce oxidants. The property of photo-catalytic effect and hydrophilic effect of TiO2 results in a paint which has self cleaning effect. Hence the surface will no longer need regular cleaning as the water and dirt cannot stick on it.
