The Most Effective Ways for Student-Faculty Outside-of-Classroom Communication – An Exploratory Investigation

Abstract
Studies show that effective outside-of-classroom student-faculty communication helps students engaged in a course and contributes positively to their learning. In this research, we investigated the most effective ways for college students to get in touch with their professors by surveying students in a medium size public university in the southeast of US. We found that, while traditional office hours are still useful, their usages are very limited. The most preferred way for students to contact their professors is email even they can freely call their professors’ cell phones. Moreover, when guaranteed turnaround time is added to email, students’ satisfaction on getting help outside of classroom is significantly increased Keyword - Outside-of-classroom communication, office hours, student-faculty interaction, technology-enabled communication.
