Boundary Management and New Product Development

Abstract
The new product development (NPD) is an integration of crossing over the different fields of heterogeneous knowledge. The past research mainly addresses on fragments about the communication process of heterogeneous knowledge among the R&D team members. There is a lack of a total solution for heterogeneous knowledge integration. In our study, we formulate a knowledge integration strategy based on the boundary management mechanism, to build a term standard for achieving the exact knowledge sharing, to help the team members communicate more smoothly, and to help establish a consensus for the team. In the case study, we investigate two representative companies of Taiwan high-tech industry as our research object. The case research results indicate that our suggested boundary management mechanism helps a company complete knowledge integration easily and remove the communication barriers quickly; thus the two companies under study adapt dynamic market situations more smoothly and their knowledge property value can be enhanced.
