An Assessment of Reading Habit among Secondary Students in Jaffna

Abstract
Reading habit plays a major role in developing the students in their academic performances as well as their language fluency. The present study aimed at assessing the reading habits of secondary level students in Jaffna, which is in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. A questionnaire was administered along with observations and interviews to gather data from the subjects. The findings revealed that the students are reluctant to spend time for reading. It further indicated that electronic devices and private tuition centers are the main distractions for the students to ignore the habit. The study insisted on the habit of reading and recommended the steps to be followed by the Government and the stakeholders. Keywords - Reading Habit, Academic Performances, Language Fluency
