The Study of Wedding Blessings: The Ethnography of Communication

Abstract
This research aimed to study the linguistic devices used in wedding blessings and the communication forms and components in the wedding blessings based on to the ethnography of communication of Hymes Dell (1964). The scope of this study was limited only to the wedding celebration of the urban people. The setting was in Bangkok. The data were collected from 10 video clips published on www.youtube.com from 2013 to 2018. The results revealed five linguistic devices used in the wedding blessings, namely lexical choices, claiming, presupposition, metaphor and rhetorical question. The forms and components of speech communication at the wedding ceremony consisted of 8 events. Based on the speech events, 6 main speech acts were used in the wedding blessings provided by the quest of honor. Keywords - Wedding Blessings, the Ethnography of Communication.
