Abstract
This study examines the impact of non-performing assets on financial performance of banks in India using a sample of 64 banks comprising of 20 public sector banks, 28 private sector banks and 26 foreign banks for a period of 11 years (2008-2018). Using ROA as the measure of bank performance, the study employed panel regression method to analyses its relation with several bank specific and macroeconomic variables. Empirical results indicate that NPAs have a significant negative impact on ROA of the banks. Priority sector lending emerged as a factor having a huge impact on banks’ financial performance especially in case of public sector banks. Keywords - ROA, NPA, India, Panel Regression.
