Colorimetric Evaluation of Coatings on Recycled Paperboards for Packaging Applications

Abstract
It is very important to characterize the paperboard substrate into specific ISO category for the study of its printability, barrier and strength properties. This also helps in comparing the paperboards properties and its printability with an international standards in order to arrive at the proper conclusion. Two types of recycled paperboards, Lenzig 100 % and Lenzig 25 % recycled paperboards were coated using K Bar Coater for 15 µm thickness using two types of coating material formulation F1 and F2 containing China clay and Anilox 40 as main coating material respectively. The color difference between coated recycled paperboards and ISO 12647-2 standard is calculated using standard color difference formula. The color difference from standard ISO reference for both types of recycled paperboards were reduced particularly for coating formulation F1 conataining china clay as the main coating material.
