Advantage of Silicate Tanning Over Conventional Chrome Tanning Process to Make Eco-Friendly Leather
Abstract
If the leather is free from chromium, then it has called as “eco friendly” leather. Mostly leather is processed using chromium compunds all over world. Nearly 80% of leather is tanned using chromium. Normally the chromium III, IV, V salts are used in tannery. The reason for using chromium compund is to get the quality leather. The leather tanned from chromium using chromium III salts which is called trivalent chromium. These salts are necessary nutrient for human body. This trivalent chromium salts naturally oxidize to hexavalent chromium in high alkali conditions. This happens during the tanning process. This hexavalent chromium produces lots of bad reaction in our body and it is easliy penetrate through the skin, which causes many major diseases. Many researches has been carried out to eliminate the chrome tanning process. This research work suggests the advantages of silicate tanning process over chrome tanning processess for making the eco friendly leather. The silicate tanned leather is having almost or less similar property of chrome tanned leather. Even though the quality of the chrome leather is better, but the environmental and health effects of chrome leather can be avoided. This process makes pollution free tanneries and the future generation can be protected from very dangerous environmental impacts caused by chromium compounds.
