Abstract
This research is focused on evaluating the technical colleges curricula in Kano state, Nigeria. Technical education is concerned with the study of technologies and related sciences and the acquisition of practical skills, attitudes, understanding, and knowledge relating to occupations in various sectors of economic and social life which is aimed at training and imparting the necessary skills leading to the production of craftsmen, technicians and other skilled personnel who will be enterprising and self reliant. This cannot be achieved without sound curricula since the quality of any programme can not be divorced from the quality its curriculum. Decades after the inception of the technical colleges curricula but the graduates of these technical colleges are still unskilled. Therefore the objective of this research is to find out the elements that are of relevance to technical colleges curriculum with regards to skills acquisition. The research is restricted to only the four (4) of the trade courses that are offered in the technical colleges in Kano state: Building Technology; Electrical Electronics; Carpentry Work; and Metal Work. The content analysis of the material was carried out using an analytical scheme developed by West in 1975 at the university of Sussex as adopted by Adamu (1988). This was found relevant because Wests scheme shares the same rationale with this research work. Recommendations are made for strengthening the curricula of the courses evaluated.
