Effects Of Sport Therapy On Positive And Negative Symptoms In Schizophrenic Patient At Al-Rashad Mental Hospital
Abstract
The study was conducted in AL RASHAD hospital in the city of BAGHADAD (Al Rashad is the only mental hospital for long-stay patients in the entire country of Iraq) for a period of 6 month between (august 2016-february2017). 100 male patients with a DSM-5 diagnosis of schizophrenia were recruited. The selected patients were divided into two groups – a study group (n =50) and a control group (n =50) by the random sampling method with the help provided by a qualified biostatistician. Study design is a single blind randomized controlled trial. Patients between the age of 18-59 years diagnosed as schizophrenia at least 2 years duration prior to the start of the study were included. All the patients were not in the acute phase of the illness no comorbid mental retardation, had no significant difference in socio demographic data and they are nearly taking the same medications and have no medical condition that is incompatible with participation. The study group (50) patients on a psychopharmacology& sport therapy session, while control group (50) patients on psychopharmacology only Written consent of the patient and the treating psychiatrists were taken and the physical fitness of the recruited sample were approved by responsible physician of their units. The study group attended a minimum 2 sport sessions weekly about 2 hours for each; they exercise deferent types of sport e.g. Football, basketball, riding bicycles and using the Gym equipments in the rehabilitation unit at ALRASHAD HOSPITAL.
