Do Searchers Know How They Searched Online? A Calibration Study on University Students' Online Search Process

Abstract
In this study, we examined Chinese undergraduate students' calibration capability with regards to their online searching processes and outcomes. We focused on the retrospective type of metacognition and collected data through retrospective individual interviews. Further, eye-tracking was employed to generate an accurate depiction of the actual search process for subsequent calibration examination. According to the correspondence level between student reflections and actual search processes, each student was categorized into high, medium and low calibration. The level of calibration was then linked to their actual search performance. Results showed a general pattern that good performers in online search tasks tended to have a higher calibration score than those poor performers. Keywords - Online Search, Metacognition, calibration
