Antimicrobial Effect of Rosa Damascena Mill. Essential Oil Against Salmonella Typhi

Abstract
Controlling the activities of microorganism in food supply is crucial when it comes to food industry. One of the methods to control these microorganisms is to use essential oils.In this study, the antibacterial activities of Rosa damascena Mill.which was collected from Kashan (Iran) are evaluated. The essential oil is obtained by hydro-distillation. Furthermore, the disc diffusion method is employed to measure the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) isalso measured using the wells in which no growth has been observed. The results demonstrate that the essential oil of the Rosa damascena Mill. exhibits antibacterial capacity against Salmonella typhi with the MIC and MBC values 500 and 1000 µL/mL, respectively. All in all, the obtained Rosa damascena Mill.essential oil is promising as a source of natural antimicrobial agents in foods and cosmetics applications.
