Teaching Approaches, Attitudes, and Problems Encountered in Teaching English Literature in Higher Education Institutions (HEIS) in Sulu

Abstract
The study sought to ascertain the extent and the significant difference between the teachers’ use of Historical, cultural, emotive and socio-psychological approaches of teaching literature; teachers’ perceived problems and attitudes in the instructional materials, methods of teaching, subject preparation and evaluation of learning areas in the teaching of literature when data are grouped according to educational qualification, status of employment and gender. Utilizing the descriptive-quantitative research design with 65 sixty five teachers. The research posited the following research hypothesis: (1) There is significant difference between teachers’ use of the approaches in teaching literature subjects; (2) There is significant differences between the problems encountered by teachers in teaching literature subjects. (3) There is significant difference between the attitudes of teachers toward the teaching of literature subjects; (4) there is significant relationship between teachers’ attitudes and perceived problems areas in the teaching of literature. Finally, it is strongly recommended that literature teachers should be well grounded with varied approaches, methods and procedures in teaching English language literature.
