Evaluation of Irreversibility Rate in Marine Boiler for Formulating the Performance of Thermal Plant by the Exergy Method
Abstract
The marine boiler is required to generate steam for the purpose of lubricating oil and fuel oil heating as well as the cabin heating for the air conditioning purpose. This marine boiler works on the principle of first law of thermodynamic and labelled with efficiencies very close to 85-95%. This study is carried out from the methodological viewpoint by a more rational and sustainable use of the available resources to ascertain the more coherent performance indicator likes exergy analysis of thermal plant. In this study the energy balance and exergy analysis is carried out on the boiler to find out the components which is having maximum irreversibility, so that improvement in the efficiency of the boiler will be achieved. The boiler where experiment is performed is fitted in the ship-in-campus of Tolani Maritime Institute’s training ship “Prabhu Vidya”. It is a once through, water tube boiler with reverse flame technology in which the water passes along the tubes only once and is completely evaporated. Fuel is burnt in the membrane coil by the pressure jet burner using the air from combustion air fan. At the outlet of the boiler, the flue gas is exhausted through the economizer to recover further heat from the flue gas. The computational fluid dynamic analysis of exiting pressure jet burner and proposed steam atomized burner is carried out to analysis the enhancement of the combustion process in this boiler by use of steam atomized burner.
