Comparison of Depiction of Food and Food-Related Activities in Japanese and Polish Elementary School Textbooks

Abstract
Even though Japanese diet is commonly considered to be one of the healthies diet in the world, research shows that in Japanese society more and more diet-related health issues such as incidence of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus among children can be seen. However, despite increasing obesity rate, Japan has the lowest obesity rate in the world. On the other hand traditional Polish cuisine is often considered to be unhealthy and greasy. Moreover, research results seem to confirm rapidly growing rate of overweight adults and steady increase in obesity rate in Poland. It is also well know that for children school textbooks are one of the most important sources of information about rules of the world that they are living in. Because of these reasons it is crucial to present results of comparative analysis of depiction of food and food-related activities in Japanese and Polish elementary school textbooks. This research compare Polish and Japanese textbooks for 1st grade of elementary school used in 2018. The results shows that in Japanese textbook food was commonly depicted in many different forms and usage. Nevertheless, in spite of the strong attempt to depict healthy and traditional food which can be seen, there are many illustrations with food-items such as cakes and salty fried dishes. On the contrary depiction of food in Polish textbooks seems rather healthy, but quite bland and unappetizing as it mostly presented as raw vegetables and fruits.
