Optimized Approach for Image Enhancement using Particle Swarm Optimization

Abstract
Image enhancement techniques have been widely used in many applications of image processing where the quality of images is important. Image enhancement is aimed to improve image quality and there are many methods for the same considering factors like contrast, image information content etc. There are existing techniques like histogram equalization and linear contrast stretching for accomplishing image enhancement. Image enhancement is considered as an optimization problem and hence particle swarm optimization (PSO) can be used for the optimization task in image enhancement. This paper studies the suitability of applying PSO in image enhancement and confirms it by doing performance comparison with existing methods. The resulting tables and figures after performance comparison with respect to the objective criterion shows the superiority of the PSO based optimized image enhancement method over the other techniques like LCS and HE.
