Abstract
This study aimed to explore the perspectives and practices of preschool teachers on children’s autonomy and the factors that influence them. Adopting a qualitative methodology, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with 4 teachers at preschools affiliated with elementary schools. The results of the study found that the four teachers believe that a child’s autonomy is very important. Regarding self-care ability, children must be asked or encouraged to do things by themselves, such as hygiene and sanitation. Regarding self-selection or decision-making, the teacher assesses the children’s safety and ability and gives them different degrees of autonomy. The perspectives and practices of preschool teachers on children’s autonomy are influenced by the teacher’s professional training, workplace experiences, school system, parents, co-teachers, and the age of children.
