Using Graphic Communication to Enhance Writing Skills Among Low-Achieving Learners: A Case Study

Abstract
This qualitative study discusses how the researchers used graphic communication to enhance the writing skills of learners with poor writing skills. Graphic communication is an important component of communication used to present information in a way that is visible and easily comprehensible. It has an important role in learning because it assists in communicating subject-content to the learners. In that regard, Oladumiyte (2014: p.30) states that “where there is effective communication, effective learning takes place.” The conceptual framework of this study was derived from Vygotsky’s Social-Constructivism theory of the "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD) (Blake and Pope, 2008). The participants in the study were learners in a junior secondary school. Theteaching material used served as the data for the study. The data were analysed qualitatively to determine the effectiveness of graphics in enhancing the writing skills of the said learners. The results of the study revealed that the use of graphics in teaching writing greatly improved the quality of writing among the learners with poor writing skills. Consequently, improved writing led to improved marks. It is recommended that teachers should move away from the traditional chalk-and-board form of teaching. They should embrace the use of graphic communication, which the 21st Century learner now prefers. Therefore, teachers should infuse more graphicsin lesson-content for efficient knowledge delivery and acquisition.
