Teaching Challenging Issues Related to the Vocabulary and Style in Military Writing

Abstract
The article with the title “Teaching challenging issues related to the vocabulary and style in military writing” talks about the vocabulary and the style used by the military personnel in military writing and the challenging task the teacher has in front while teaching it. Teaching Writing for Professional Purposes in English as a second language is a challenging task for a teacher. Among the four skills to be taught in a foreign language, the writing skill is the most difficult one to teach and learn since the writer has to pay attention to many things like, style, grammatical structure, format and the lexical resource. Since the military writing and the language used within the armed forces includes all aspects of service life, it can be described as a “code”. Like all the other closed communities even the military personnel has developed its own jargon, partly as a means of self-identification full of positive and negative terms or words with positive and negative connotations. Most often this jargon is incomprehensible for the outsiders; and this incomprehensibility arises from the use of the technical terms, jargon, acronyms and other syntactical issues. The language used from the military personnel has its own characteristics that have to deal with the vocabulary, the abbreviations and their shades of meaning. This article will particularly discuss those elements of the vocabulary and style that make military writing a challenging task for the teacher and the student. Elements like the use of short words, everyday language words, using a single word instead of a whole expression, the use of derived nouns from certain verbs instead of the verb, use of the suffix “-ize”, abbreviations and abbreviated phrases and absolute phrases that make the so-called specialized vocabulary Key words - Military Writing, vocabulary, style, teaching, abbreviations
