Combined Extract of Zizyphi Semen and Codonopsis Radix improves Synaptic Deficits and Memory Impairments in an amyloid β-induced Dementia Moue Model

Abstract
Amyloid β (Aβ), a protein found in senile, is a major hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Since Aβ causes many pathological events within the AD brain, a therapeutic target for AD is the prevention of Aβ toxicity. In the present study, we tested whether a combined extract of Zizyphi Semen and Codonopsis Radix (ZSCR) prevented Aβ-induced aberrant synaptic plasticity and memory impairments. In Aβ-induced LTP deficit experiments, ZSCR ameliorated Aβ-induced LTP deficit in a concentration-dependent manner (P< 0.05). ZSCR also ameliorated object recognition and passive avoidance memory impairments induced by Aβ. These results suggest that ZSCR may be a good candidate for preventing and ameliorating memory deficits in patients with AD.
