Paper Title
An Index Of Scientific Production Over Time

Abstract
We propose an index which accounts for the volume and concentration of scientific production over time. The index takes the value r when an author, over his career, has had r years such that in each of those years, he has produced at least r publications. The index takes into account particularly periods of high and sustained productivity, giving less weight to spikes in productivity which cannot be sustained over time. In extension, the index is adjusted for publication intensity and career length. The index is linked with two approaches to research and publication: a simultaneous approach, where several projects are pursued simultaneously, and a sequential approach, where projects are studied one at a time. The index is applied to a small number of prominent economists. Finally, the index is used in conjunction with the h index to provide a snapshot of quality and quantity simultaneously.
