A Study on Automatic License Plate Recognition Techniques

Abstract
Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) has become an important part of Intelligence Transportation System (ITS). ALPR implementation can be used in many applications, such as road traffic monitoring, stolen vehicles searching, toll's automatic payments on highways, and parking management. The license plates can be partially occluded by dirt, lighting, towing accessories on the car and problem getting worst in cases when images are captured from a far distance, blurred, defected and also depended on the weather condition. ALPR commonly divided into four stages: image acquisition, license plate area detection, character segmentation, and character recognition. This paper studies on different types of approaches and its challenges involved in plate area detection, character segmentation and character recognition of license plate.
