How Temporal Considerations Affect Pro-Environmental Behavior: The Role of Norms

Abstract
This study examines the relationship between the consideration of future and immediate consequences and pro-environmental behavior (i.e. saving and ecological behavior). This study also highlights the role of personal and social norms as a key mechanism that mediates these effects. The results show that CFC-Future is positively related with both saving and ecological behavior, whereas CFC-Immediate is positively related with ecological behavior. The results also show that CFC-Future activates personal norms, but CFC-Immediate activates social norms which then affect pro-environmental behavior. Keywords Time Orientation, Consideration of Future Consequences, Pro-environmental Behavior, Norms.
